'We Can Be Heroes' by Graham Smith
We’d like to recommend Graham Smith’s new book ‘We Can Be Heroes – Punk, New Romantics and Beyond’, the tale of London clubbing in the early 80s.
Graham was an essential cog in Spandau’s early pioneering days. He was our original graphic designer and was responsible for our initial performance posters and record sleeve designs. He also happened to capture those days on camera. And now 30 years later he is producing his first photographic book of those heady days.
It’s structured around 400 photographs he took at nightclubs back in the early 80s, from Billy’s and The Blitz via Le Beat Route and the Mud club to the Dirt Box and the Wag. And there’s plenty of very youthful looking Spandau images.
Chris Sullivan has written a brilliant and hilarious main text and Robert Elms has contributed an introduction. Our very own Gary Kemp has written a foreword along with Boy George and Steve Strange.
Beautifully designed over a stompin’ 320 pages, it’s the definitive record of this fascinating and influential period of youth sub culture, produced by people who were actually there in the thick of it.
For the book I’ve interviewed more than 60 ‘faces’ from the scene and captioned the photography with 500 of their quotes from Sade to Philip Sallon. You’ll also find playlists from all the clubs, plus charts plotting the rise and evolution of the movement.
Graham has struck a deal with Unbound publishing and it will be ‘Crowd funded’.
