Greenwich Summer Sessions: Songs in the Key of London Review and Photos
Last night Gary was proud to be invited to perform within the grounds of the historic Royal Naval College in Greenwich.
As a special guest of the event’s curator, Squeeze songwriter Chris Difford, Gary was part of the evening’s lineup of artists singing songs themed around the Capitol. “Songs in the Key of London” also featured (amongst others) Difford’s songwriting partner Glenn Tilbrook, UB40’s Ali Campbell, Nerina Pallot, Fairground Attraction’s Mark Nevin.
As the sun set on the beautiful riverside venue, Gary took to the stage to perform one of his favourite songs about London, written by his idol David Bowie. London Boys is an early and often forgotten Bowie classic that sums up the mood of Soho in the late 1960s. Only fitting then that Gary followed this up with Spandau’s own homage to the same part of the city a decade later with the soul funk of Chant Number 1.
The finale saw all of the evening’s musicians gather onstage to perform one of the most iconic songs about London, The Kinks’ Waterloo Sunset.
